The Ivanhoe Traders Association manages the centre via an elected executive and committee that convenes once a month and looks at ways to enhance the centre through marketing and promotion. The Association operates as an incorporated body and is well assisted by the Economic Development department of Banyule City Council.
Every year at Ivanhoe various activities are held which aim to bring the local community together. One of the major events is the Ivanhoe Fiesta traditionally held on the first Saturday in May. With an estimated 15,000 people that walk the street on this day, local entertainment including a major act for the kids, food and drink, it's an excellent way to spend the weekend right in the heart of your own backyard.
A bit of history
The construction of Ivanhoe Shopping Centre dates from the 1850's with the majority of the centre being built between 1915 and 1940. This time frame is reflected in the diverse architectural character and significant representation of impressive 1940's Art Deco design. These buildings line both sides of the upward slope of Upper Heidelberg Road from Kiernan Avenue in the West to St Elmo Road in the Easterly extremity.
Ivanhoe Shopping Centre is proud of its history. Many of the traders have been in the area for many years and have seen its progression with new specialty shops coming in to cater for the ever increasing demand of shopping local. You can find just about anything you want to find in this considerably large shopping strip. Feel free to take a look at our Business Directory. You will appreciate how big the centre really is.
We're sure if you navigate your way through our website, you will find something that will inevitably bring you to Ivanhoe.
